Recommended Islamic Links
There are thousands of Islamic web pages on the internet, and, as with the rest of the internet, you do need to be careful as to which pages you frequent. Below is a handful of pages which I regard as being the most useful for new Muslims. If you have any suggestions, please tell me.
The best page for general information about Islam is Islamicity. This is a very informative site, including news, articles, searchable Qur'an and Hadith databases, and services such as a Prayer Timetable for any location in the world. By far the most useful part of this site, especially for new Muslims, is the Ask the Imam section - I myself have learned a lot from it.
Another good place to look is Al-Islam.com. This is a site written in 7 languages, and includes free downloads, Qur'an Search by Subject, a comprehensive Islamic dictionary, Hajj guide, world prayer timetable, Hijri/Gregorian date converter and Zakat calculator.
An essential part of learning about Islam is interacting with other muslims. One such place where you can meet other muslims and ask questions is the Islamic Forum, which hosts discussions on a whole variety of topics, from Islamic studies and current events, to cookery and computers - it also has a section dedicated to new muslims. Another good method of interaction is by joining an Islamic mailing list, such as those found at Yahoo! Groups: Islam.
There are many muslim authors, some of whom are far better than others. I regard Harun Yahya, who has published books on many Islamic and scientific matters, including the evolution theory, terrorism and anti-semitism, to be one of the best. All of his books are available to view online or download in .pdf (Adobe Acrobat) format. Highly recommended books include:
- Miracles of the Qur'an - a look at the many proofs that the Qur'an really is the word of Allah.
- Islam Denounces Terrorism - a book which details exactly how unIslamic terrorism really is.
- Basic Tenets of Islam - an introduction to Islam written specifically for those who have recently been introduced to Islam.
- An Index to the Qur'an - a thorough alphabetical index to the Qur'an.
- Answers from the Qur'an - common questions about Islam answered with quotes from the Qur'an.
If you wish to buy your own Islamic literature, one place worth looking is Sound Vision. This shopping site sells all sorts of Islamic books and products, with branches in Illinois and London. Their site also contains forums and some good articles, such as a Muslim Daily Planner.
An unfortunate consequence of the events of 9-11 is the rise of anti-Islamic hate sites. However, there are a number of Muslims who have published their own sites, doing an excellent job of highlighting the errors and plain ignorance of the anti-Islamic brigade. The biggest and most comprehensive of these is Answering Christianity, run by a Palestinian brother living in America. As well as answering just about every lie and query raised about Islam, he has also produced his own Qur'an and Hadith search programs, amongst others. Another site well worth a look is Bismikaallahuma.org. This site, which is run by a Malaysian brother, does a very good job of proving the divinity of the Qur'an and the corruption and non-divinity of the Bible. A final mention goes to Faithfreedom.com. The articles currently on this site do a good job of disproving and discrediting a certain hatemonger.
There are a number of sites which answer a lot of the general misconceptions surrounding Islam, especially with regards to terrorism and the position of women. Islam for Today is a very well written page showing how terrorists and extremists are tarnishing the good name of Islam, as well as some very good articles about muslim converts and other subjects. It also contains a very good picture gallery. A similar site worthy of mention is The True Religion.
As we all know, charity is one of the five pillars of Islam. There are a great number of muslim charities to support, the most well-known of which is Islamic Relief. This charity works on various projects around the world, which includes organising Qurbani (sacrificing a lamb or cow at Eid Ul Adha, then distributing its meat to the poor and needy).
Al-Usrah.net - The Muslim Family Network contains Islamic articles relating to everyday life (like cooking, leisure etc), personal matrimonial ads, and links to orphan adoption pages. At the time of writing, Al-Usrah.net is currently in the process of being updated, and will be changing its name to Madina.net in the future. Another good matrimonial site is Nikah.com, which has a large collection of personal ads and articles on the subject of Islamic weddings and marriage.
Finally, if you wish to find more Islamic websites, the best site to try is the Mamalist, which lists 2154 Islamic webpages at the time of writing. Another exhaustive resource is Islamic Finder, which contains addresses and numbers of mosques, Islamic businesses and associations throughout the world, as well as prayer timetables for major cities. This site also contains a good directory of Islamic web pages.
Islamic Downloads
This site in PDF (coming as soon as the site update is completed).
The following programs are all available to download free of charge. If you know of any that could be linked to here, please let me know.
- Islam Religion Software
- Produced by Samir Alicehajic, a brother in Zagreb, Croatia. This is a comprehensive reference program containing a huge amount of information. This includes an English translation of the Qur'an, a number of hadith collections, a biography of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), a collection of letters from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), sermons given by Muhammad (SAW), instructions for prayer (both textual and illustrated), wudu and fasting, a prayer time calculator and a Hijri / Gregorian calendar. Although parts of the program can be tricky to use (for example, you need to know the longitude and latitude of your city in order to use the Prayer Time Calculator), this is still an invaluable source of information. You can also download translations of the Qur'an in different languages, and audio files containing recitations of the Qur'an.
- Holy Qur'an Viewer (via archive.org)
- Produced by Jamal Al-Nasir at DivineIslam.com. In my opinion, this is the best of the Qur'an programs available for free download. The main feature of this program is the ability to download different translations of the Qur'an, both various English versions and a large number of other languages, such as French, German, Spanish, Malay, Japanese, etc. It also features customisable views, a subject index, Syed Maududi's commentary of each Surat, a list of Quranic duas, a glossary of Islamic terms, a search facility, the ability to download specific parts of the Qur'an in audio (Real Player) format, and the ability to copy and paste verses in English, Arabic and transliterated Arabic.
- The Hadith Software
- Produced by A Meah Jagirdar and M Joyton Miah of Islamasoft Solutions. Like the Quran Viewer, this also features the ability to download databases to extend the program - this program offers different hadith collections, namely Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Malik's Muwwata, Fiqh As-Sunnah, Shamaa-il Tirmidhi, An-Nawwawi's 40 Hadith, the Hadith Qudsi, and Authentic Supplications of the Prophet. This program also enables you to copy-and-paste hadiths, as well as print them out. (NOTE: Islamasoft's website was under reconstruction at the time of writing. However, the links given below should still be active - right-click on each link and select 'Save As...').
- Hijri Cal (via archive.org)
- Produced by Jamal Al-Nasir at DivineIslam.com. A useful little program which displays a simultaneous Hijri / Gregorian calendar, with significant Islamic days and occasions clearly marked.
- Athan Software
- A product of Islamic Finder, this is a prayer time calculator which sits in your toolbar and alerts you when the next prayer time is dua with a choice of recorded Azans from around the world, including Mecca, Madinah and Al-Quds (Jerusalem). Highly customisable with a large number of prayer time calculation options, and easy to set up thanks to its built-in database of 6 million cities.
